Inclusive Fitness Training Workshop Skaggs Building Room 114

Inclusive Fitness Training Workshop
May 15 – 16, 2019
UM Skaggs #114

The Montana Disability and Health Program (MTDH), in partnership with the Rural Institute on Inclusive Communities and the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability, will hold an Inclusive Fitness Training Workshop May 15-16 in Missoula. This workshop is a great opportunity to learn about inclusivity, exercise recommendations, adaptations and more.

What is Inclusive Fitness?
Fitness professionals must understand how to ensure people who may have a physical, sensory or cognitive disability feel welcome and receive appropriate and individualized guidance in order to meet their physical activity and fitness goals, whether in a health club, outdoor and/or home-based setting.

What will participants learn?
In addition to general knowledge of exercise physiology, exercise testing and programming, you will also gain knowledge of:

Inclusive facility design
Awareness of social inclusion for people with disabilities
The American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Safe and effective methods and recommendations of exercise
Appropriate adaptations to exercise
Precautions and contraindications to exercise related to disability
Motivational techniques and appropriate instruction for individuals with disabilities to begin and continue healthy lifestyles

Is support to attend available?
The Montana Disability and Health Program can support up to 10 people to travel to the workshop in Missoula. If you need support to attend this workshop, please contact Heather Welch at hwelch@mt.gov. Once you have registered for the conference, you will receive an email about the room block and the finalized agenda.

Are there other opportunities available?
Some workshop participants may qualify to take the ACSM exam to become a “Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer” (CIFT). In prior workshops, MTDH offered the “Inclusive Fitness Champion” program: MTDH pays ASCM exam fees in exchange for the participant organizing a ‘champion’ activity in their community. We will try to set up an exam opportunity at the end of the workshop.
