Join us for a celebration of life and honoring of a colleague Dr. Gyda Swaney, who passed away July 18.
Gyda was an associate professor in clinical psychology, director of UM’s Indians into Psychology program and beloved faculty member. An alumna of UM, Gyda served as faculty for more than 18 years and touched the lives of many students, colleagues and community members.
She served as a wise mentor to many Native psychologists, students and colleagues, providing them with the gifts of her knowledge and friendship. A devoted community member, she served on the YWCA board as a member and eventually as chair, reflecting her desire to help all families in the region live free from violence.
Her commitment to indigenous communities was reflected in her scholarly work, clinical work and volunteer work that included serving as a Missoula Urban Indian Health Center board member. She was a volunteer for countless other organizations and civic causes. Still, she maintained an unwavering commitment to all of her students on their paths to becoming clinicians and scientists.
Gyda’s passing created a loss that will be felt not just in Montana, but also across the nation. This event is sponsored by UM’s Department of Psychology. If you have questions about the celebration, please email the organizers: Chris Fiore at email@example.com; Kate Shanley at ShanleyKW@mso.umt.edu; or David Schuldberg at firstname.lastname@example.org.
